Guidelines For A Perfect Fit
  • Measure width from left to right, height from top to bottom, using a steel tape measure. Do not use a cloth tape.
  • Depending on your preference and window design, your blinds may be mounted inside or outside the window casing.
  • Measure each window individually, as size variances are common.
  • Record width first, then height (also referred to as length) to the nearest 1/8".  Make sure you write the results down.
  • Double-check all measurements.
  • Do not take your own deductions. The factory will take necessary deductions and allowances.
Important Measuring Note:  All roller-style shades with the RollEase clutch system will have a fabric reduction of 1/2" on each side.  Therefore, if light control is critical, outside mount is recommended.

Horizontal Blinds and Fabric Shades

Inside Mount (IM):
  • Inside mount blinds and shades are installed inside the window casing.  Minimum depth requirements vary by product and headrail type, or by tube size (for roller and solar shades).
  • For the width measure the exact distance to the nearest 1/8" between inside surfaces of window frame at the top, middle and bottom.  Use the narrowest width.
  • For the height (or length) measure the exact distance to the nearest 1/8" from inside surface at top of window to sill at the left, middle and right.  Use the longest height.  If you prefer blind not to touch sill, deduct 1/4".  If there is no sill, measure height to point where blind is to reach.
  • Measure the window diagonally in two places, as shown.  If the two diagonal dimensions are not equal, we recommend an outside mount application for optimal function and aesthetics.
  • Do not take any deductions for clearance. (The factory will take necessary deductions for a perfect fit.)

*For Graber Synergy Products-On inside mounts, the front shade has a 1/4" light gap per side, while the back shade has a 1/2" light gap per side.  For optimal light control, outside mount is recommended.

  • Additional Information for Measuring Bali Roller and Solar Shades:

    • On Continuous Loop inside mounts, there is a ¾” light gap per side.  On Cordless inside mounts, there is approximately 1” of light gap on right and just over ½” on left.
    • For optimal light and glare control, outside mount is recommended, or you may add a secondary soft window  treatment (drapery or curtain) to hide the light gap on an inside mount.
    • Fabric width is 1-3/8” narrower than finished shade width of the tube and its components on Continuous Loop shades.
    • Fabric width is 1” narrower than finished shade width of the tube and components (without valance or side covers) on Cordless shade
  • Outside Mount (OM):
    • Outside mount blinds and shades are installed outside the window casing, covering an area larger than the window itself.
    • For the width measure the exact distance to the nearest 1/8" between the outermost points where the blind is to be placed.  For optimum light control, this measurement should extend 3/4" beyond the window opening on each side (or1 1/2" for the entire width).
    • For the height (or length) measure exact distance to the nearest 1/8" from where top of blind will be located to top of sill.  If there is not sill or if blind is to overlap window frame, measure to point blind is to reach.
    • The factory makes NO allowances on outside mount.

    Vertical Blinds

    Inside Mount (IB):
    • Inside mount blinds are installed inside a window casing or door, or wall to wall in a room.
    • For the width measure the opening across the top where the headrail is to be installed from inside of jamb on left to inside of jamb on right.  Round the measurement down to the nearest 1/8".  A minimum depth of 2 7/8" is needed to install inside the window.
    • For the height (length) measure from the inside top of the opening on the left, at the center and on the right to the sill.  Round the measurement down to the nearest 1/8" and note the smallest dimension.
    • Do not make any allowances.  The factory will make all adjustments so the headrail will fit the opening properly and the vanes will clear the sill by 1/4" to 1/2".

    Inside Mount (IB) Depth Requirements:

    • Minimum Depth = 2 7/8"
    • Headrail Flush = 3 1/8"
    • Channel Valance Flush = 3 3/4"
    • Fabric Flush = 6 3/4"
    Outside Mount (OB):
    • For the width measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed to the nearest 1/8".  Blind should overlap opening at least 4" on each side to ensure privacy.
    • To maximize your view, allow adequate overlap and consider the stack width.  If you want the entire window uncovered when the blind is fully open, you may need to add more than 6" to the width.
    • For the height measure the height of the area to be covered and round down to the nearest 1/8".  Blind should extend at least 3" above and 3" below opening or window molding.  For ceiling-to-floor installations, make adequate allowance for carpeting.  Specifying OB measurement means the factory makes NO allowances.

Caution:  Blinds installed on windows near wall or baseboard heaters must clear the heaters by 12" above and 6" to the side.

    Patio Doors:
    • For the width measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed to the nearest 1/8".  Blind should overlap opening at least 4" on each side to ensure privacy.
    • To ensure easy access through the door and allow adequate overlap, consider the stack width.
    • For the height (length) measure the height of the area to be covered and round down to the nearest 1/8".  Blind should extend at least 3" above opening or window molding.  Deduct 1/2" for proper clearance.  Specifying OB measurement means the factory makes NO allowances.
